Cabo Verde Chegou
Cabo Verde Chegou is one of the many participants in the Rotterdam Unlimited Summer Carnival. Although the foundation originated from the Cape Verdean community in and around Rotterdam, it is, like the summer carnival itself, multicultural in its orientation. Over the past few years, the group has included participants from diverse backgrounds such as Cape Verde, Suriname, the Netherlands, Indonesia, France and Brazil.
The foundation also aims to promote summer carnivals in other cities, such as Zoetermeer, Capelle a.d. IJssel, Weert and Amsterdam.
At the beginning of this century, individual participants and small groups of Cape Verdean origin were already taking part in the Rotterdam summer carnival. Starting in late 2003, the Lima Lopes and Estevao families began collaborating, allowing them to participate for the first time as a group in 2004. Cecilia and Manuela, in particular, led the initiative, with the help of many volunteers.
The name Cabo Verde Chegou was chosen, which roughly translates to “Cape Verde has arrived.”
